About Omega

Omega is a Swiss watch manufacturer founded in 1848, with more than 175 years in the world of horology. Over time, the brand has built a reputation based on technical precision rather than purely commercial appeal. From the laboratories of NASA to the stage of the Olympic Games, Omega has been present in environments where accuracy is essential.

Among the major names in Swiss watchmaking, Omega occupies a distinctive position. The brand is accessible enough to serve as an entry point into serious mechanical watchmaking, yet it also carries the technical depth and historical relevance associated with some of the most respected manufacturers in the industry.

Its collections cover a wide range of styles, from professional dive watches to refined dress watches. Each line maintains a clear identity, while still reflecting the broader philosophy of precision, durability, and functional design that defines the brand.

At Luxehouze, every Omega watch offered has passed a thorough verification process to ensure its authenticity and condition meet established standards.

History of Omega

In 1848, Louis Brandt founded a small workshop in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland. He assembled key-wound pocket watches using components sourced from local craftsmen and distributed them across Europe. This modest workshop later developed into one of the most respected watch manufacturers in the world.

A significant milestone came in 1894, when his sons introduced the 19-ligne calibre. This movement featured interchangeable components, an innovation that was rare at the time and greatly improved servicing and reliability. The success of this development led the company to adopt the name Omega Watch Co.

In 1932, Omega became the official timekeeper of the Olympic Games in Los Angeles, a role it has fulfilled more than 28 times since then. In 1965, NASA officially certified the Omega Speedmaster as the only watch to pass its extreme testing for manned space missions.

Four years later, during the Apollo 11 Moon Landing, astronauts wore the Speedmaster on the Moon. This event firmly connected the Omega name with the history of human exploration.

Since 1995, the Omega Seamaster has been worn by the fictional character James Bond in every film of the 007 series. This association reflects Omega’s reputation for combining reliability with a refined appearance.

Popular Omega Models

1. Omega Seamaster

The Seamaster is the oldest and most diverse collection in Omega’s catalog. It was introduced in 1948 to celebrate the brand’s 100th anniversary.

Since then, the line has expanded into a family of watches with different characters. Models such as the Omega Seamaster Diver 300M serve professional diving needs, while the Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra is designed for everyday versatility.

Within the Omega Seamaster range, Diver 300M and Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean are among the most recognized models. Planet Ocean offers water resistance up to 600 meters, a helium-release valve, and a ceramic unidirectional bezel.

Seamaster is also widely associated with the James Bond films, which contributes to its cultural presence. Even without this connection, the collection stands on its own through clear design, reliable movements, and a wide range of variations.

2. Omega Speedmaster

The Speedmaster was introduced in 1957 and later became one of the most important watches in horological history when NASA selected it for all manned space missions.

It was the only watch to pass NASA’s extensive durability tests, including resistance to extreme temperatures, shocks, and pressure changes.

The most iconic version, the Omega Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch, has a 42 mm case. On the wrist it feels slightly more compact, as the crown guard contributes to part of the overall dimension.

Beyond the Moonwatch, the Speedmaster family includes automatic versions, racing chronographs, and models with additional complications.

3. Omega Constellation

The Constellation collection first appeared in 1952 as Omega’s first mass-produced chronometer-grade watch. This was an ambitious step that positioned the model for customers who valued precision in a more elegant presentation.

Omega Constellation is known for its distinctive “griffes,” or claws, located on the sides of the case. This design detail has remained a defining feature of the collection for decades.

Modern versions retain these elements together with an integrated bracelet and refined dial finishes. New gradient dial variations were introduced in 2025.

For those seeking an everyday watch with a strong dress character without appearing overly formal, Constellation provides a balanced option. It may be less widely discussed than Speedmaster, but its focus on substance is often appreciated by collectors.

Popular Omega Products

1. Omega Seamaster Diver 300M

The Omega Seamaster Diver 300M is one of the most recognized references in the entire Omega catalog.

With water resistance of 300 meters, a ceramic unidirectional bezel, and a Co-Axial Master Chronometer movement certified by METAS, the watch is designed to perform reliably in demanding conditions.

Its design is robust enough for diving while remaining clean and balanced for casual everyday wear. The model is available in stainless steel, bi-metal, Sedna Gold, and several limited editions, including collaborations related to the James Bond films.

2. Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch

The Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch is the watch worn by astronauts on the Moon. The manual-winding calibre 3861 used in the current model is a direct descendant of the movement used during NASA’s certification tests in the 1960s.

The Moonwatch has a 42 mm case and is fitted with hesalite crystal rather than sapphire. This choice is intentional because hesalite is more resistant to impact and does not shatter into sharp fragments.

Technical decisions like this reflect the Speedmaster philosophy, where function remains a priority. While the watch is also available in materials such as Moonshine Gold, Canopus Gold, and ceramic versions like “Dark Side of the Moon,” many collectors still prefer the stainless-steel version for its historical authenticity.

3. Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra

The Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra sits between a professional dive watch and a dress watch. With water resistance of 150 meters and a slimmer design than the Diver 300M, it is suitable for everyday activities that do not require a dedicated dive watch.

One of its defining features is the dial with horizontal lines inspired by wooden boat decks. This detail adds visual texture without appearing excessive.

The model is available in sizes from 38 mm to 41 mm and in various dial colors. The “Shades” editions offer brighter color options. Aqua Terra also showcases Omega’s advanced anti-magnetic technology, capable of resisting magnetic fields up to 15,000 gauss.

4. Omega De Ville Prestige

The Omega De Ville collection represents Omega’s more formal side, focusing entirely on dress watch aesthetics.

This line is designed for customers who prefer a watch with a calm and elegant appearance while maintaining the technical reliability associated with Swiss watchmaking.

De Ville Prestige features a slim case and clean dial design with subtle color and index options. The Co-Axial movement inside ensures reliable accuracy without emphasizing technical complexity on the exterior.

Available in sizes ranging from 32 mm to 41 mm, De Ville Prestige offers a refined option for those seeking a classic Swiss dress watch. For collectors who already own a sporty model, this collection often provides a complementary alternative with a quieter character.

5. Omega Constellation Globemaster

The Omega Constellation Globemaster is notable as the first watch in history to receive the Master Chronometer certification from METAS.

This standard includes eight strict tests, including accuracy under magnetic fields of up to 15,000 gauss. As a result, it is considered one of the most technically verified watches available.

Its design draws inspiration from the 1952 Constellation, particularly through the distinctive pie-pan dial. The fluted bezel, another recognizable feature, is available in ceramic for improved durability against scratches.

Globemaster is offered in stainless steel, Sedna Gold combinations, and full gold versions. Regardless of material, each watch leaving the factory has passed rigorous accuracy tests that place it among the most technically validated watches in its category.

FAQ – Omega

1. What is the difference between Seamaster and Speedmaster?

They come from different origins and serve different purposes. Seamaster was developed as a water-resistant watch, ranging from the versatile Aqua Terra to the Diver 300M and Planet Ocean for serious diving. Speedmaster is a chronograph that originated in motorsport and later became certified by NASA for space missions. In daily use, the key difference is that Seamaster is more suited for wet environments, while Speedmaster is known for its strong historical identity.

2. What is Master Chronometer and why does it matter?

Master Chronometer is a precision certification introduced by Omega in 2015. Watches must first pass COSC chronometer testing and then complete eight additional tests conducted by METAS, including accuracy under strong magnetic fields. It is considered one of the most rigorous verification standards in the watch industry today.

3. Can the Omega Speedmaster be used for swimming?

The Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch has water resistance of 50 meters, which is sufficient for rain or splashes but not recommended for swimming or diving. Unlike the Seamaster, which is designed specifically for water environments, the Speedmaster is built for a different technical purpose. For swimming or diving, the Seamaster Diver 300M or Planet Ocean would be more suitable.
